Fun, interactive music sessions for young children and their parents/caregivers
Young children and their parents/caregivers join together for a fun, thirty-minute music session, then afterwards enjoy snacks and refreshments in a relaxed setting. mainly music is an activity you and your child can participate in, from birth to school age.

Mainly music is a fun music group for parents or primary care givers to enjoy together with their young child. Throughout the morning, children develop gross and fine motor skills, language, imagination, maths and pre-reading skills as well as socialize with others. Each mainly music is associated with and is run by volunteers from CORE. Started in 1990 in New Zealand, children will be introduced to music, creativity and more, plus families given a chance to think about the God-part of life.
Amazing to think that all this can be achieved in a loving, shared family environment

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to take anything to a mainly music session?
No, everything is provided for you at the session. Sometimes a theme day will be staged – you might be asked to bring your child dressed up
What age should I start my child at mainly music?
Start your child from birth! Seriously, if you need to get out – come!!! Once your baby becomes more interested, bounce, swing and sway your child, move their hands
Can I start mid-term?
Yes. mainly music is a fun, interactive music session – not music classes. So you’re not coming in part way into ‘a curriculum’. You can join at any time
What if I miss a week?
That’s okay – you have a young child! Routines go upside down, children get sick, mornings just don’t happen the way you expected … so stay at home and don’t fret. Whether or not you are part of a group who has a closed roll, we encourage you to phone the contact person if you miss a week – they are keen to know how you are!
Do you have a waiting list?
Yes! We currently have 35 families enrolled on our permanent list and are at full capacity, and we now operate a closed roll system.
A new family arriving on a Thursday morning will be able to stay for that morning so that they can see whether they’d be interested in coming. They can then register their details and will be added to the waiting list. However, waiting list families will no longer be able to continue attending sessions unless and until they have a permanent place.
Why are we limiting the number of families attending?
- We want to look after the families we already have on our permanent list. When there are too many people, the noise levels go up and it becomes difficult for the children to listen to the music and to focus and concentrate on what is happening in the session. Small children get distracted easily and then they don’t get the most out of the session.
- Overcrowding when toddlers are dancing and moving about also means more children bumping into each other and more risk of a little one getting hurt. This impairs the children’s enjoyment of the session.
- We are also aware during coffee time of trying to make sure no child leaves the building without being accompanied by an adult. This is harder to supervise with much larger numbers.
- The Mainly Music team run the session to facilitate connection, communication and fun between the parents/caregivers and their children, as well as time for children to connect with each other and adults to have some adult social time over coffee. We want to provide this in a safe, secure and enjoyable environment and to ensure a quality morning for our families.
- Having a better idea of numbers also helps us to cater for morning tea and for gifts.
