Belarus

Sarah Kennedy went to Belarus this summer and we as a church supported her. We’re delighted now to hear how she got on ….

This summer I traveled to Belarus, in Eastern Europe, for 2 weeks to help run a children’s camp. I went with Samaritan’s Purse who run work teams and summer camps in developing countries during the summer.

The team,14 people of all ages from all over Ireland, stayed in a campsite which has especially good facilities for children and is open throughout the year. Children from areas in Belarus that were contaminated by Chernobyl often come here for up to 2 months for respite and medical treatments. The children we were working with all came from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many had medical problems and during the camp they were able to have some medical treatment and also a wonderful holiday.

The camp programme included sports, games, activities, swimming and crafts. The children got 3 good meals a day. Every morning and evening we would have ‘Jesus Discovery Time’ singing songs, having bible stories, drama and sharing testimonies with the children. Each child was given a bible and every day about 7 children received a card and a gift so that, by the end of the camp, every single child had a present. It was a wonderful two weeks and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as did the team!

I would like to thank everyone for helping me raise the money!
